Dawn is a control panel device and startup init combination which rotates both your startupscreens and startupsounds. You can “link” each of your startupscreens to a startupsound(i.e. linking a picture of yourself with a sound saying “hello”). You may have as many of these linked groups as you want.
Note for Macintosh II users: A special feature of Dawn is to extract the correct colors from pictures on color Macintoshes. Your pictures can be saved as either Apple PICT files, or PICT resource ID=0(startup screens), Dawn will automatically determine which type of file it is. If you wish to use the color loading feature, make sure your file was either saved with PixelPaint™ from SuperMac Software or that PixelPaint type resources were added to the file with programs like Steve Blackstock’s PICT Pal or Giffer— available on most major online networks. This conversion will not affect your pictures operation in whichever paint program you use. For Techies: this conversion adds the PixelPaint resource type ‘COLR’ to the file, allowing Dawn to load the correct colors much faster than extracting them from the picture data itself.
Sound File Format:
Dawn can play any sound as long as it was saved in "resource" format with a program such as SoundEdit. These are the same type of sounds that HyperCard uses. Dawn will allow you to select exactly which sound in a resource file you want it to play.
Note for Suitcase users: If you select a sound in a sound file that Suitcase uses, you must select it only when the file is closed, and you must make sure the Dawn INIT runs before the Suitcase INIT. If you play your sounds after your INITs, then you must have Suitcase run after the DawnRestore INIT.
•How to use Dawn
1)The Control Panel dialog:
The box in the middle section of this dialog is divided into two parts. The left side is a list of all the pictures you have entered, and these pictures are “linked” with a sound in the right column. You do not have to have a sound for each picture and vice versa. The first two buttons, on and off, turn all of Dawn’s features on or off. Complicated, eh? Just click in either of these to permanently turn Dawn off and on.
Change Button:To set a sound or picture, just select the appropriate cell in the list and click change. If you want to create a new group, click change for the cell below the last actual entry.
Clear Button:To clear a sound or picture, select the desired cell in the list and click clear.
2)The About Dialog:
This should be fairly easy, since you are already using it right now!
3)The Options Dialog:
You can have the sound played either directly after your picture loads or right before the startupscreen goes away. Just use the two buttons “Before INITs” and “After INITs” to set this feature.
If you click on Rotate, Dawn will rotate to another screen-sound group each time you startup going down the list and then starting again at the beginning. Randomize tells Dawn to randomly pick a picture from the list each time you startup.
The Skip Key is a key you can set that will do the same thing as turning off Dawn except that it will be temporary. Just hold this key down at startup, and Dawn will not run.
Future Enhancements:
•Desktop Picture capability with rotation and randomization.
•Different startupscreens over several monitors, and the choice of drawing a single startupscreen across several monitors.
